We at Somerset County Caravans would recommend that beginners to towing should keep the loaded caravans weight to approximately 85% of the vehicles kerb weight and experienced towers at approximately 90% of the vehicles kerb weight.

As a rule of thumb the average loading of a caravan by a family of four is in the region of 150 kgs.

Beginners to towing with this vehicle should be looking for a  caravan of approximately  85% of 1835 kgs = 1560 kgs  then subtract the 150 kgs of loading capacity which leaves the optimum unladen weight of a caravan at approximately 1410 kgs

Experienced towers with this vehicle should be looking for a  caravan of approximately  90% of 1835 kgs = 1650 kgs  then subtract the 150 kgs of loading capacity which leaves the optimum unladen weight of a caravan at approximately 1500 kgs

Please note that these figures are only approximates and that the manufacturers maximum towing weight  (in this case1700kgs) should NEVER be exceeded.

Sometimes a manufacturer will quote a tow weight that is far in excess of the mass of the vehicle. Generally this is based on the total train weight (maximum car weight + maximum tow weight) and means that with this weight attached to the vehicle the engine and transmission can cope with  a hill start on a 12% gradient. It does not mean that this is what you can legally tow on the road!

Where this weight (or any other e.g. nose weight) is given as lower by the manufacturer the user ignores it at their peril. Insurance could well be void after an accident - worse, the illegal combination could cause the accident if the vehicle is unable to handle it.

Please note that these figures are only approximates.
